Whether you’re a parent, teacher, supervisor, or support worker—ask:

  1. “What am I (or we) currently doing that makes you feel valued?”

  2. “What’s something small that would help you feel more connected?”

  3. “When do you feel like your voice really matters here?”

These questions unlock psychological safety—a key ingredient in motivation and mental wellness.

They don’t require you to fix everything. They just show that you care, that you’re paying attention, and that you’re willing to learn.

When people feel seen, heard, and safe—their nervous system relaxes.

Cortisol drops, the vagus nerve activates, and the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for focus, empathy, and problem-solving) stays online.

That’s when learning, healing, and teamwork can truly happen.

Choose one role you play this week—parent, teammate, leader, educator.
Ask just one person:

“What’s one thing I do (or could do) that helps you feel more valued here?”

Listen without interrupting.
You might be surprised by how small and doable their answer is.
