Why Logic Doesn’t Work in a Meltdown (Do This Instead)
When it comes to handling meltdowns...I’ll be honest. Even as a parenting expert, I mess this up ALL the time.
Here’s the mistake: Thinking I need to “fix” my child’s emotions instead of just sitting with them.
Why This Matters?
🧠 The Brain Needs to Feel Before It Can Think
When kids are melting down, their emotional brain (amygdala) takes over, shutting down the thinking brain (prefrontal cortex). When we try to “logic” them out of it, it doesn’t work—because they can’t process logic yet.
What to Do Instead:
Use this simple Calm-Down Script in tough moments:
✅ Get close and make eye contact before speaking.
✅ If your child is angry: “You’re really mad right now. I’m here.”
✅ If your child refuses to cooperate: “I hear you. You don’t want to do this.”
✅ If your child is overwhelmed: “I see this is a lot. Let’s take a breath together.”
✅ If your child is frustrated with a task: “You’re working so hard. Want a break or to keep going?”
